Enjoy a memorable summer day exploring Kaunissaari—an island full of stories, coastal nature, and grazing sheep. The day includes a leisurely kayaking trip, a short hike, and a cosy campfire break with coffee and snacks.

Just a stone’s throw from the Eurajoki mainland, yet beyond the reach of roads, Kaunissaari is a hidden island gem—valuable for both its natural richness and its layered history.

We begin our trip with a peaceful paddle along the sheltered Lapinjoki River and Karhunkarinrauma Strait, taking time to observe the surrounding nature and birdlife—we might even spot a majestic white-tailed sea eagle soaring overhead!

After about five kilometres of kayaking, we land on Kaunissaari Island for a well-deserved snack and coffee break. But before settling down, we’ll take a short hike along the cultural trail that shares intriguing stories from Kaunissaari’s colourful—and at times quite unbelievable—history.

Along the way, we’re likely to be greeted by the friendly, free-roaming sheep of a local sheep farm. These sociable island residents truly love a good scratch from passing hikers!

After enjoying our nature-filled campfire break, we kayak back to our starting point, adjusting our route according to the day’s weather conditions. If the wind is kind, we aim to circle the entire island.

About Kaunissaari Island in Eurajoki

Kaunissaari is a diverse nature and recreation destination located in the Eurajoensalmi strait, with no road access or public boat connections. Thanks to its sheltered location, fascinating surroundings, and stunning seascapes, Kaunissaari makes for a perfect stop on a kayaking trip.

However, it's not a place to rush through—while on the island, it's well worth exploring its nature and cultural trails.

In the past, Kaunissaari was home to a steam-powered sawmill and cargo harbour established by local industrialist Antti Ahlström. At its peak, the island housed over 300 residents. Although the mill ceased operations in the early 20th century and Kaunissaari has remained relatively untouched by human activity ever since, the traces of its vibrant history are still visible.

In 2023, Kaunissaari was named Traditional Landscape of the Year in Finland. During the summer, the island’s landscapes are maintained by the friendly Åland sheep from the local farm, Ali-Unkin lammastila. These calm and sociable characters are always on the lookout for a good scratch—spending time with them alone can easily make an hour fly by.

For visitors, Kaunissaari offers four lean-to shelters, several campfire sites, and two small harbours with jetties. Each campfire site is also equipped with a composting outdoor toilet.
